Fear of the MRI?

fear of mri nj

The magnetic resonance imaging machine or MRI is a medical innovation that has enabled doctors to receive detailed views of tissues and structures within the body to a degree that wasn't possible previously. However, due to the confined tube the patient has to lie in during the testing and the loud noise the machine produces, many patients are so anxious they cannot go through the procedure.

Fortunately this type of fear can be reduced so that a patient can feel comfortable enough to have their MRI done and receive the benefits of an accurate diagnosis.

Is a fear response a conscious choice? Of course not, it is an automatic response of the subconscious mind which includes habits, bodily functions and protective responses.

Fear in and of itself is not a bad thing as you probably be wouldn't be alive for too long without it. Evolution dictated that we needed to be able to respond instantly to perceived threats as the conscious, logical mind is way too slow to be trusted with that function.

When danger is sensed the body goes into what is called the fight or flight response, resulting in a release of chemicals that energize and strengthen the body for decisive action. Yet this same response also produces anxiety symptoms such as a racing heart, muscle tension, trembling and difficulty breathing.

Hypnosis addresses the subconscious mind and the triggers that bring about the fear response. Often an individual like yourself can notice significant relief and a renewed sense of self-control in a fairly short period of time.
