A Vacation Upgrade With Mindfulness?

NJ Hypnotist
Relax into the moment...

Perhaps you have had this experience. You make plans for a vacation getaway. Yet when you get there your mind keeps drifting to the problems in your everyday life, such as worrying about how much work will be waiting for you when you get back. It can seem as if you really never went away.

The ability to worry is a uniquely human trait that in the right measure can be valuable. Unlike other animals that rely solely on instinct; we can anticipate and prepare for challenges in advance of them happening However, worrying in excess can rob us of our ability to enjoy the present moment, including a well needed vacation.

An antidote to excessive worry is mindfulness; the quality of being full absorbed in the present moment. In my practice, I often teach my clients how to focus on the breath as a means of bringing about present moment consciousness. Recognizing that in the present moment as long as you are breathing you are OK and as well as learning how to observe thoughts and feelings, rather than getting all tangled up in them.

Yet the focus on the breath is but one of countless ways to promote mindfulness. For example, if you are at the beach there are so many things that you can use as a focal point that can engage your senses in the here and now; the feeling of your footsteps in the sand, the sound of the waves, the warmth of the sun, etc. Deciding to focus on what's happening RIGHT NOW is the first step.

A practice is to consider keeping a daily journal of your vacation as it encourages you to be observant so that you have something to write about. Don't be concerned if your writing skills are so-so, you don't have to share it with anyone else unless you want to.

Lastly, put some time limits on your smartphone and social media usage. They are designed to grab your attention away from the present moment and the people, places and things around you.
