Give Yourself the Benefit OF Doubt

Generally speaking, we tend to consider being firm, unyielding, and resolute in our beliefs as a virtue. But is it always?

It’s been my observation that a lot folks would benefit from allowing some doubt to creep in when it comes to their self-imposed limitations.

“I will never be able to get that excess weight off.”

“Nothing I try ever works out for me.”

“I will never get better or recover.”

“Quitting smoking is just too hard. I am hopelessly addicted.”

While these negative beliefs can feel true, they may not be factually accurate. A friend and mentor of mine, the late Tony Demarco, used to tell his hypnosis students, “the subconscious mind believes the lies you tell it.”

Belief does not necessarily equal true. However you could say a strong belief might as well be true as your deeper intelligence will work relentlessly to be consistent with that perception.

For example, at one point in my life I absolutely believed I would never be able to feel comfortable when it came to public speaking. The mere thought of getting up in front of a group filled me with intense feelings of dread and panic.  However, the art and science of hypnosis enabled me to overcome that self-limiting belief to the point where for many years I did public presentations and came to really enjoy doing them.

You may have some issue of your own that you wish to flip the script on. Casting doubt on those tired old beliefs is a good place to start.
