Medical Hypnotism

Mind/Body Healing is supported by relaxation and healthy optimism...

While more and more people are using the services of a Certified Hypnotist for problems like quitting smoking, weight loss or improving self-confidence, fewer know about the use of hypnotism to help improve the quality of life for people with health problems.

The mind/body connection is a concept that has become more widely accepted. Unhealthy, prolonged mental stress can have an adverse effect on the physical body. And the stress of chronic health conditions provoke stress and worry in the mind, creating a vicious cycle that disrupts the body's natural process of self-healing and repair.

With many chronic health problems, it is only understandable that pessimism sets in. Quite often standard medical treatment doesn't meet with great success or has unacceptable side-effects. Eventually the patient is told she will "have to learn to live with with it."

Medical hypnotism is considered a method complementary to standard medical care, not a replacement for proper diagnosis and prescription by a licensed healthcare provider. However, if your physician has no objections, hypnosis counseling may very well help you to improve your quality of life and wellbeing.

There are some conditions that have proven very responsive to hypnosis counseling. A partial list includes:

Tinnitus- a condition where a person experiences ongoing ringing, buzzing or other noises in the ear, it can be incredibly stressful and frustrating. Quite often the source of the noise cannot be determined and the conventional treatments do not provided consistently successful outcomes.

The more the a person worries about the noise, the more noticeable it becomes. Yet it is interesting to note that most people with tinnitus are not bothered by it! Hypnosis counseling can help you diffuse the fear and worry, which can lead to better coping and in some cases, an actual reduction in the volume of the tinnitus.

The work of hypnotherapist Kevin Hogan has been groundbreaking in this area and his book "Turning Down the Volume" is highly recommended.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)- is reported to be the 2nd leading cause of worker absenteeism in US, surpassed only by the common cold. A persistent condition marked by such digestive symptoms as diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating and gut pain, it has no known cause and medical treatments are limited and often not as helpful as liked.

There is a growing body of evidence that the protocol of 6 sessions of hypnosis counseling, each two weeks apart, can greatly reduce and in some instances eliminate the symptoms of IBS. The IBS client is also given daily self-hypnosis practice and self-monitoring homework between the visits, which greatly increases the chances of a successful outcome.

Chronic Pain-although pain is usually a useful signal, it can persist when no longer necessary. Pain has both a sensory and emotional component and the two combine to create the total pain experience. As pain persists tension increases, which further aggravates the discomfort. Sleep quality frequently suffers, further adding to the toxic mix.

Hypnosis and self-hypnosis can teach you useful tools and strategies to distract and refocus your mind away from the discomfort along with relaxation skills.

Insomnia- public health authorities are giving greater attention to the importance of sleep nowadays. A lack of sleep has been linked to an increased risk of obesity and a decrease in the functioning of the immune system. Sometimes a lack of sleep is related to other health problems like chronic pain. More frequently it is related to unresolved tension and worry that the person can't seem to "turn off" prior to sleep.

Hypnosis involves mental and physical relaxation, which can in and of itself can resolve a poor sleep cycle. Other hypnotic techniques can help root out the source of the unresolved tensions.
